Faces Of Hope

The theme for Eyes That See in 2018 is “Faces of Hope.” My very first time in Ethiopia, I will never forget how overwhelmed, small and helpless I felt as I witnessed hundreds and thousands of individuals lacking what I felt that they needed. Throughout my time in country, I was really reflecting on these feelings and what I was going to do about them. I could just leave, run back to my cocoon of comfort in the United States, throw my hands up and say this problem is too freaking big for just me, or I could stop and look into the eyes of the person standing in front of me.

10 years later, I’m still going back to Ethiopia. Obviously I chose to stop and look into the eyes of the person standing in front of me.  I will never forget that moment, everything else around me, the busyness of the city, smells, honking horns, goats passing by, pushing and shoving, all disappeared as I looked directly into the face of hope standing in front of me. A calm came over me and I knew in that moment that I just needed to love this person, the face of hope right in front of me.
